The Ocular Lens -- Images here are of the ocular lenses on a binocular microscope. The ocular lens adds magnification, typically 10 times (multiply the magnification of the objective lens by 10). Binocular microscopes generally can be adjusted to fit exactly the distance between the viewer's eyes. The diopter adjusts for differences between vision in the viewer's eyes. The first time one uses the microscope, the image is focused using the focusing knob with one eye closed (check the microscope instruction manual to see which side to focus first). Then that eye is closed and the image is brought into focus for the other eye by using the diopter adjustment on the corresponding ocular lens. |
